Tekkem Slater – Des Moines, Iowa

Des Moines, Iowa

Des Moines, Iowa was first founded by John Dougherty, an Indian Agent, in 1834. The
City, originally used as a military post and called Fort Des Moines, was established at the
merge point of the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers. Des Moines grew rapidly and was
designated the capitol of Iowa in 1857. As most American cities, Des Moines struggled
during World War I, the Great Depression and World War II. Federally funded projects
and the community’s resilience proved to be an essential combination, resulting in today’s
extremely popular and thriving City. Home to over 200,000 people, Des Moines is
recognized as a center for government, education, business, culture and the arts
and is also the third largest insurance center in the world.
