Where Maryland Industry Puts Lime to Work

Maryland moved early and hard on air quality, and the capital that went into sulfur control around the Patapsco a generation ago left behind a regional fleet of lime consuming equipment that still has to be fed accurately today. Alongside it sits a working harbor full of plants that soften process water, neutralize acid streams, and answer to Chesapeake Bay discharge limits. RDP Technologies designs the preparation and dosing equipment behind all three. For the municipal side of the market, see our Baltimore water and wastewater treatment equipment page.

Softening Process and Makeup Water at Baltimore Manufacturing and Generating Sites

Hardness reaches Baltimore plants by two very different routes. Sites drawing groundwater in northern Baltimore County sit over the Cockeysville marble, a carbonate formation that produces some of the hardest well water in the state, while the generating stations and terminals along the Patapsco pull enormous volumes of surface water for cooling and steam. Food and beverage manufacturers in the harbor add a third case, and cane sugar refining in particular has used lime in juice purification for well over a century, which makes reagent quality a product quality issue rather than just a utility one.

Lime softening stays the economical answer at industrial volumes. Dosing lime lifts pH until the carbonate fraction settles out as calcium carbonate, while magnesium departs as a hydroxide, and soda ash joins the reaction wherever noncarbonate hardness has to fall too. Run at temperature, that same chemistry takes silica down with it, the reason hot process units remain standard upstream of high pressure steam generation.

A softening basin inherits whatever the feed system hands it. Tekkem slakers weigh quicklime and water separately on load cells before the reaction starts and keep the batch in its proper temperature band, then dilute to a usable slurry strength anywhere between one and thirty percent. Feed that holds its concentration gives a basin that settles the same way every shift and residual hardness the lab does not have to argue with.

The Healthy Air Act pushed Maryland's coal fleet into scrubbers ahead of most of the country, and the generating complex on the Patapsco at Brandon Shores and Wagner has been operating that equipment ever since, with reliability commitments extending its service window beyond what anyone expected a decade ago. Waste to energy in South Baltimore relies on hydrated lime injection for sulfur dioxide and hydrogen chloride removal, and the cement operations out in Carroll County carry sulfur obligations of their own. Air permitting for all of it runs through the Maryland Department of the Environment under EPA Region 3.

Two families of technology dominate. Wet systems circulate a lime or limestone slurry through an absorber, where the sulfur ends up bound as sulfite and eventually gypsum. Semi dry and injection designs skip the recirculating slurry and meter powdered hydrated lime straight into the gas path upstream of the fabric filter. Reagent that arrives at an inconsistent concentration produces removal numbers that wander on the continuous monitor and sorbent bills that never quite reconcile against tons of sulfur actually captured.

Preparing that reagent accurately is the piece RDP supplies. Batching by weight pins slurry strength to the value the absorber was sized around, and one platform runs quicklime or hydrated lime interchangeably with nothing mechanical to change, which is useful at any site reevaluating its control approach or moving between suppliers on price.

pH Adjustment and Metals Removal for Discharges into the Patapsco and Chesapeake Watershed

pH Adjustment and Metals Removal for Discharges into the Patapsco and Chesapeake Watershed

Every industrial discharge in this region eventually reaches the Chesapeake, and the bay wide pollution limits have made Maryland permits among the more demanding on the East Coast for metals and nutrients alike. Chemical manufacturing around Curtis Bay and Fairfield produces acidic process streams by design. The Sparrows Point peninsula, now redeveloped for logistics and manufacturing after more than a century of steelmaking, carries legacy groundwater and stormwater management obligations that outlived the mill itself.

Lime handles both problems at once. Bringing a stream up in pH satisfies the discharge window and simultaneously converts dissolved metals into hydroxides that settle out, so one reagent addresses two permit parameters. The complication is that industrial flows arrive in batches and surges rather than at a steady rate, and a feed system calibrated to an average condition will miss the peaks and waste reagent through the rest of the cycle.

Automatic dosing solves that. The Tekkem controls adjust delivery against plant flow or a concentration setpoint chosen by the owner, so pH stays where the permit requires while conditions move underneath it. One continuous loop feeds several injection points, metered through a pinch valve and flow meter, and the delivery lines do not scale shut. Getting this right avoids a violation on one side and unnecessary chemical spend plus extra sludge on the other.

What Our Feed Systems Do
What Imprecise Lime Feed Actually Costs Over a Year of Operation

What Imprecise Lime Feed Actually Costs Over a Year of Operation

Reagent is a line item that gets scrutinized at budget time and then largely ignored between reviews. Hydrated lime runs roughly thirty percent more per ton than quicklime, so plants choosing it for easier handling are already paying a premium and have every reason to use it efficiently. A feed system that overshoots by a modest margin does it on every batch, all year, and the overspend never appears as a single visible event that anyone investigates.

The downstream costs compound. Excess lime becomes excess sludge, and that sludge has to be dewatered, hauled, and disposed of at a price per ton of its own. Scaling in delivery lines from poorly controlled slurry adds labor and eventually forces replacement of piping that should have lasted far longer.

Accuracy is the whole design intent of the Tekkem platform. Weighing both the lime and the water before the reaction starts, rather than inferring a rate from a volumetric feeder, is what makes consistent slurry strength possible in the first place. Dosing then follows plant flow automatically rather than an operator's best estimate, and the result is lime purchased in proportion to work actually performed.

Startup, Operator Training, and Service Support Across the Equipment Life

Startup, Operator Training, and Service Support Across the Equipment Life

A lime system is a twenty year asset, and most of its cost of ownership is decided long after the purchase order closes. Startup is where that gets set. We commission on site, dial in the recipe against the lime actually being delivered to that plant, and work through the sequence with the people who will run it rather than handing over a binder and driving away.

Baltimore area operations also change hands and change staff. Equipment that depends on one person's undocumented knowledge becomes a liability the day that person retires. The Tekkem system runs automatically and reacts to changing conditions on its own, including seasonal swings in process water temperature and variation in lime characteristics between deliveries and between suppliers, so competence transfers with the plant rather than with an individual.

Support does not end at substantial completion. RDP has been supplying this equipment for over 45 years, and parts, technical assistance, and controls support stay available for systems installed decades ago. That continuity is worth asking any vendor about before the equipment is selected rather than after something needs replacing.
