Lime does three different jobs inside a Pittsburgh industrial plant. It scrubs sulfur dioxide out of flue gas, it neutralizes acidic process water and mine drainage, and it strips hardness out of boiler and cooling water. All three depend on slurry that stays consistent batch after batch, which is the problem RDP Technologies has spent over 45 years engineering around. Municipal drinking water and biosolids equipment for the region is covered separately on our Pittsburgh water and wastewater treatment equipment page.
Flue Gas Desulfurization Reagent Systems for Power and Industrial Plants Across Western Pennsylvania
Few regions in the country carry a longer history of sulfur dioxide control than the Ohio, Allegheny, and Monongahela valleys. The large coal units east of the city in Indiana County, Keystone and Conemaugh, have long run wet scrubbers, and the coke, glass, cement, and specialty chemical operations scattered across the surrounding counties carry their own sulfur obligations. Allegheny County is unusual in that air permitting and enforcement inside the county line run through the Allegheny County Health Department rather than the state, so a source in Braddock and a source thirty miles upriver answer to two different agencies with two different monitoring regimes, both under Pennsylvania DEP oversight and EPA Region 3.
Wet flue gas desulfurization contacts the gas stream with a lime or limestone slurry in the absorber, capturing sulfur dioxide as calcium sulfite and gypsum. Spray dryer absorbers and dry sorbent injection take a different route, introducing hydrated lime into the duct upstream of the baghouse. Every one of those configurations is only as steady as the reagent behind it, because slurry concentration drift shows up immediately as removal efficiency drift and as reagent that gets purchased but never used.
RDP builds the feed side of that equation. Weight based batching holds slurry concentration where the scrubber was designed to see it, and the same platform runs quicklime or hydrated lime without physical modification, which matters when a plant is evaluating a switch between wet scrubbing and sorbent injection. For a Western Pennsylvania operator working against a compliance deadline, reagent consistency is usually the cheapest lever left to pull.

pH Adjustment and Acid Neutralization for Mon Valley Process Water and Mine Drainage
The Mon Valley still runs one of the densest concentrations of heavy industrial water users in the eastern United States, from the coke works at Clairton through the mills at Braddock and West Mifflin, with the Beaver County cracker complex adding a substantial new industrial draw downriver. Process water from operations like these leaves the plant well outside any permitted discharge window. Layered underneath all of it is abandoned mine drainage, which remains one of the largest surface water problems in Pennsylvania, running acidic and metal loaded out of the bituminous coalfields across Washington, Greene, Fayette, and Westmoreland counties. Lime is still the reagent of record for both jobs.
Raising pH with lime slurry precipitates dissolved iron, aluminum, and manganese as hydroxides and pulls the stream back inside its NPDES limits. What makes that difficult in practice is not the chemistry but the variability, since influent flow and acid loading rarely hold steady for long. Underfeeding means a permit exceedance and overfeeding means wasted reagent and a sludge handling problem downstream.
The Tekkem operating system doses automatically against flow, milligrams per liter, or whatever setpoint criteria the owner selects, holding a steady pH state around the clock as conditions move. A continuous slurry delivery loop with pinch valve and flow meter dosing feeds multiple injection points from one system without scaling, and the controls integrate into existing SCADA for the reporting these permits demand.

Lime Softening for Boiler Feedwater and Cooling Systems in Pittsburgh Plants
Industrial plants across the Pittsburgh region draw enormous volumes of river water for boiler makeup and cooling tower makeup, and the hardness and alkalinity that water carries goes straight to work scaling tubes and fouling heat transfer surfaces. At the flow rates a mill, a generating station, or a chemical plant runs, membrane and ion exchange treatment alone become expensive ways to solve a problem that lime handles well.
Lime softening raises pH so carbonate hardness drops out as calcium carbonate and magnesium leaves as magnesium hydroxide, with soda ash added where noncarbonate hardness needs to come down as well. Hot process softening takes the same reaction to elevated temperature and pulls silica down at the same time, which is why it remains standard ahead of high pressure boilers. The result is water that protects the equipment behind it rather than slowly destroying it.
The performance of any softening basin traces back to whether the lime arriving at it is consistent. A Tekkem slaker weighs out its lime and its water on load cells before anything reacts, holds the batch in the 180 to 190 degree Fahrenheit band where slaking completes properly, and dilutes to a working strength anywhere from one to thirty percent. Steady reagent in means a stable basin, predictable sludge production, and chemistry an operator can actually trust between rounds.

Slurry Feed Equipment Built to Run Continuously Without a Maintenance Window
An industrial site does not get to take its lime system down on a Tuesday afternoon. Scrubbers run when the unit runs, neutralization runs when the plant discharges, and softening runs whenever the boilers are up, which in this region generally means continuously. Conventional slaking equipment tends to fail in the places nobody wants to reach, with bearings and seals sitting inside a tank full of dust and steam.
The Tekkem slaker carries a single moving part inside the reaction tank and puts every mechanical component outside it, away from the abrasive conditions that shorten equipment life. Roughly 65 plants have cut maintenance time and cost after making that change. The operating system reads load cell and thermocouple data continuously and adjusts the lime to water ratio to hold processing temperature as conditions shift.
Those shifts are real and constant. Process water temperature swings with the season, lime characteristics vary lot to lot, and a purchasing change to a new supplier can move slaking behavior overnight. A system that compensates automatically keeps that variability away from the operator and away from the process.

Engineering Support for Allegheny County and Western Pennsylvania Capital Projects
Industrial sites in this region are rarely greenfield. Equipment goes into river valley footprints that were laid out generations ago, threaded between existing tankage, structures, and rail, often while the rest of the plant keeps running. Retrofits here also have to survive real winters, where outdoor lime handling and slurry lines face freeze conditions that a specification written elsewhere may not have accounted for.
Because RDP handles the engineering, the fabrication and the controls programming itself, equipment is shaped around the constraints of the actual site instead of being forced into a standard package that nearly fits. We work directly with plant engineers, corporate capital groups, and the EPC and consulting firms handling the design, from early scoping through startup and commissioning.
Over 45 years and hundreds of installations have produced a straightforward engineering philosophy: build it rugged, keep the mechanical design simple, and make sure the people running it at three in the morning can keep it running. Western Pennsylvania industrial operators get one accountable manufacturer for the reagent system and long term technical support behind it.
