The Courtney Bend Water Treatment Plant is located on the banks of the Missouri River and draws water from a total of 38 wells. The wells are located on the north and south sides of the river and the water is actually drawn from the Missouri River Alluvial Aquifer. The City of Independence Water Department supplies water to approximately 250,000 people, including residents of Independence and 11 wholesale customers. Average daily production is about 27 MGD with a peak production day of 44 MGD set back in 2002. The grit is removed prior to the slurry entering the Slurry Aging tank using a 14 mesh screen deck. The Tekkem Slaker with it’s full 10 minutes of slaking, produces “clean” grit whereby Independence generates about one wheelbarrow of grit every 4-5 days.
